Kavanaugh Debuts On Supreme Court, Pledging To Be A 'Team Player'

United States President Donald Trump shakes hands with Judge Brett Kavanaugh at the White House in Washington DC on Oct 8 2018

On Monday, President Donald Trump started Brett Kavanaugh's swearing-in ceremony at the White House by claiming that the new Supreme Court justice has been effectively cleared of the sexual misconduct allegations brought against him.

The Republican party raised a total of $5.7 million from Sept. 30 to October 5, compared to $4.38 million raised by the DCCC from the end of September to October 5, which is the day Kavanaugh secured the votes in the Senate to be confirmed.

Kavanaugh was administered the official Constitutional Oath and Judicial Oath by Chief Justice John Roberts and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy shortly after being confirmed by the Senate. There will also be those looking for any lingering signs of Kavanaugh's heated, partisan confirmation fight.

Mr Kavanaugh's elevation to the high court had been considered safe until California university professor Christine Blasey Ford went public with explosive allegations that he had sexually assaulted her in 1982, while they were in high school. Fifty-two percent said they believed the women versus 38 percent who said found Kavanaugh most credible.

Trump appeared to be in a good mood, fresh off the confirmation of Kavanaugh, but his lightheartedness turned darker when he spoke of Democrats and the stakes of the election.

The president - whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower chamber of Congress in November - angrily predicted that the Kavanaugh row would backfire on Democrats.

In court, Kavanaugh asked questions of both sides in arguments over increased prison sentences for repeat offenders.

Mr Kavanaugh's installation cements the strongest conservative majority on the court since the New Deal, delivering on a decades-long ambition of the American right. "And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent", Kavanaugh said.

"I look back at 28 years of Thomas, and I sense absolutely no retribution or I haven't seen any change in the way the courts have operated", he said.

51 killed in Kenya bus crash
In 2016 more than 40 people died when an out-of-control fuel tanker ploughed into vehicles and then exploded on a busy highway. Kenya has struggled to reduce the rising number of road accidents as more people in the growing middle class acquire vehicles.

His ascent to the court was sealed by a 50-48 Senate vote on Saturday.

The Iowa Republican said that's only fair since the Senate would not consider then-President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland in 2016.

The justices privately made the decision to reject the appeals by an environmental group and companies that supported the regulation before Kavanaugh's confirmation, and announced the action on Tuesday.

In similar news, a national survey conducted October 1-2 by Rasmussen found that 65 percent of likely USA voters thought the Senate's handling of Kavanaugh's nomination was "poor".

"Everybody just smiled because they knew if it had been a Republican president and a Democratic Senate, they wouldn't have filled a vacancy", he said.

He later expressed regret over some of his comments.

"The Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional", he said.

The other eight justices were all in attendance for Monday's swearing-in, which was entirely ceremonial.

Trump on Twitter on Tuesday said he was "very proud" of Kavanaugh and his family, and disparaged the anti-Kavanaugh protesters.
