Google's New $35 Chromecast Plays It Safe

Pixel 3 XL hands

After weeks of leaks, Google today took to stage in NY to share information about what was already leaked into oblivion, but you've got to give the company props for turning up at least.

Google introduced its new Pixel 3 smartphones yesterday alongside a host of other hardware and software products. There's a fair bit to get through here, so let's get started. This meant that they were not a commercial success in India, and one analytics firm estimated in August that only 80,000 Pixel 2 phones had been sold in India since launch.

But Google says it's not so much about the hardware - it's what the Pixel 3 can do.

Google has sold an estimated 7 million Pixels over the past two years, nearly imperceptible next to the 3.6 billion phones shipped during that time, according to IDC.

The Pixel 3 packs in a host of new ideas about how AI can change the phone experience - from the practical to the pretty out-there. The company just had its annual hardware unveiling, and all three of its new devices leaked repeatedly in the lead-up to the event.

The new Midnight Blue finish looks smart - Google wanted something different from the finishes available for its Pixel phones, so this is the only option available at launch.

Editable Portrait mode images are also here, allowing the depth of field to be changed just like the iPhone XS.

In our hands-on preview of the new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones, we covered numerous new features Google announced on stage during its big press event. It's the first time the Alphabet Inc. subsidiary has embraced the format that Samsung has had for a few years and Apple adopted last year. All of this happens live, and the phone also transcribes the conversation for you to read. We can't wait to see how it measures up against other cameras and as a standalone phone camera. The Pixel 3 will launch in 10 countries, up from six for the Pixel 2 a year ago. The phones will be available for sale from November 1, 2018.

In the U.S., Google also rolled out Home Hub, which couples a small display screen with an internet-connected speaker. The Home Hub will sell for $149 when it launches at American stores October 22.

David Ruddock, the managing editor of Android Police, recently tweeted and insisted Google has a Pixel Slate tablet in the works.

The Slate has a custom "molecular display", which is an LCD with a resolution of 3000 x 2000 and 400 nits of brightness. A new Super-Res Zoom feature uses computational photography to reduce the amount of noise and artifacts in the photos when zooming in on a shot.

We are also happy with the keyboard, which enables smooth typing with its good for the class key travel and it attaches very firmly to the pogo pins. It comes in two new colors, chalk and charcoal, and is available for purchase now in the US, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, and Sweden. Titan, a form of security Google has developed for its data centres, is now also apparently found on the new Google phones.
