Google reveals the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

New Pixel phones are out today

Google showed off one especially impressive feature that its Assistant app can perform: Call screening, which can screen a phone call for you if you don't recognize a number.

Google demos the new Google Pixel 3 XL during a pre-launch preview at their campus in Mountain View, Calif., Sept. 26, 2018.

Google branched into hardware three years ago so that, like Apple, it could have full control of the performance of its applications and the revenue they generate. They are set to be launched on November 1.

Cameras: Google's camera processing software is tough to beat and the Pixel 3 XL will likely yield some great results.

There's a new pair of Pixel USB-C earbuds, which aren't the upgrade we were looking for to last year's Pixel Buds, though they only cost $45 and offer push-button access to the Google Assistant.

The fronts of the phones now have two separate cameras: an 8MP 28mm f/1.8 (35mm equiv.) standard one and an 8MP 19mm f/2.2 (35mm equiv.) wide-angle one. In what's referred to as Google's official debut of Duplex, the phone will be able to screen your calls and tell spammers to go away without you having to endure the emotional labour of talking to anyone.

Perhaps critically, it does not contain a camera: something that Google explicitly noted was so that people feel comfortable taking it with them into private places - like on your bedside table.

The Pixel joins LG's V40 in sporting a second front lens to fit more people into selfies. Instead, Google uses software to mimic that effect. The latest photos of your kids are added to the album automatically.

Bixby: Samsung's Bixby assistant is often lamented by the tech press, but it is actually very useful, especially for those performing field work or need to have both hands free to work. Just tap on a button for Google's voice assistant to ask the caller about the goal of the call.

Google Pixel Slate 1
Google reveals the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

Google Photos uses machine learning to only select the best photos.

Google just announced this feature alongside the new Google Home Hub, a "smart display" like the Lenovo Smart Display.

First, starting out in English in the US, Pixel 3's on-device AI helps you screen phone calls and avoid spam calls. "It's mostly about convenience here".

"The magic of this phone is on the inside", said Google senior vice president for hardware Rick Osterloh, in an interview.

Amazon shipped 21.5 million smart speakers, including those with displays, in the year ended June 30, compared with 18.3 million for Google, according to research firm Canalys. By comparison, Apple sold about 217 million iPhones previous year.

Tuesday's announcements come a day after Google disclosed a flaw that could have exposed personal information of up to 500,000 users of its Plus social network.

The Pixel Slate does seem to be positioned as an addition to, but not a replacement for, the Pixelbook.

Right off the bat, most of the hardware rumors are true. The company announced its version, the Google Home Hub, which it pegs as "the best photo frame".

Google also introduced the Pixel Stand, which serves as a wireless charger that turns the Pixel into a smart visual and audio experience that can be controlled by on-screen actions or by using voice commands. The firm estimates that Google will grab half the market by 2025 with an overall installed base of 150 million units. The Home Hub will sell for $149 when it launches at American stores October 22. The new version Echo Show starts at $229, while the least expensive Facebook Portal sells for $199. Over in France, where Google will also hold a local Pixel launch event on Tuesday, a local retailer did the same thing, revealing in the process the purported release date for the two phones.
