51 killed in Kenya bus crash

This bus crashed near Kericho in western Kenya on Wednesday leaving 50 dead

Emergency personnel and security forces inspect the wreckage of a bus at the site of an accident in Kericho, western Kenya, on 10 October 2018.

Fifty people were killed on Wednesday when a bus travelling between the Kenyan capital Nairobi and the western city of Kisumu swerved off the road coming down a slope and rolled repeatedly, police said.

At least 10 injured people have been reportedly rushed to local hospitals in the area, while children under the age of five are some of the victims who perished in the accident.

The bus was not licensed to operate at night and its owners will faces charges, regional traffic police boss Zero Arome said.

The Daily Nation newspaper quoted Traffic Commandant Samwel Kimaru as saying that 2,345 people have died in road crashes across Kenya in the past 10 months, an eight percent rise compared to previous year.

Kenya has struggled to reduce the rising number of road accidents as more people in the growing middle class acquire vehicles.

Around 3,000 Kenyans die every year in road accidents, according to government statistics, but the World Health Organisation estimates the figure could be as high as 12,000.

Last December, some 36 people died in a head-on collision between a lorry and a Nairobi-bound bus on a road near Migaa in Kenya.

In 2016 more than 40 people died when an out-of-control fuel tanker ploughed into vehicles and then exploded on a busy highway.
