Trump thanks Kim for his 'courage', steps taken for denuclearising North Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to reporters ahead of the 73rd UN General Assembly in New York on Monday

U.S. President Donald Trump began his presidency on the resonance of his aggressive "America First" agenda, and now, as he is set to address the UN General Assembly today, is expected to deliver a speech that will focus on that message, as well as his country's role in foreign matters.

Trump also elicited laughs after blasting Germany's dependence on Russian oil.

Trump wrote, in stark contrast to unceasingly hostile rhetoric directed towards the Iranian leadership up to now by the president and his administration.

Trump says Iran does not respect its neighbours or their borders.

Trump also criticized the nuclear agreement with Iran, from which the US withdrew in May.

Trump announced new US sanctions on Maduro and his inner circle. Additional restrictions will go into effect on November 5.

While Trump specifically thanked Jordan for hosting Syrian refugees at the UNGA, he failed to mention Turkey, which hosts more than 3.5 million refugees, by far the biggest number in the world.

"Ultimately, the only long-term solution to the migration crisis is to help people build more hopeful futures in their home countries", Trump said.

He also asked, "all nations to isolate Iran's regime as long as it continues".

A Washington Post-ABC poll in July, just after Trump was widely criticized for his performance during a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, found that 47 percent of Americans thought Trump had weakened USA leadership in the world, and 30 percent thought he'd made it stronger.

Trump met with Kim in Singapore in June.

Trump praised Kim as "very open" and "terrific", despite the sluggish pace of progress toward denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

President Donald Trump is highlighting US gains under his watch as he opens his address to the UN General Assembly - and is getting a laugh.

Trump addressed the General Assembly on Tuesday and said he appreciated the steps Kim has taken to denuclearize. He emphasised that the sanctions will remain in place until denuclearisation occurs.

Trump had stated that Iran's military budget rose by 40 percent since the nuclear deal was signed.

The president also called for reform to the world trade system, saying that trade must be "fair and reciprocal".

Trump announced that newly placed USA tariffs on Chinese goods brought the total value of Chinese products facing import taxes to $250 billion dollars.

"We reject the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism", Trump said.

His mention of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar all in one breath, was received by stone-faced Saudi officials.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Mr Trump described Iran as having a "corrupt dictatorship" which he claims "fueled and funded" the civil war in Syria.

The trouble with that of course is that his words become meaningless, as do his boasts about his achievements, be they in the electoral college or the stock market.

President Donald Trump smiles at reaction from United Nations members during part of his speech.

"In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than nearly any administration in the history of our country", Trump said, prompting laughter in the United Nations hall.

"Didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK", replied Trump to the laughter, which prompted several leaders in the room to break out into applause. That view did not necessarily have much support from the leaders from the U.N.'s 192 other countries, however.

"Moving forward, we are only going to give foreign aid to those who respect us and, frankly, are our friends".

"If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens", he said, "there will indeed be hell to pay".
