UK: May's cabinet 'fully behind' Brexit plan

THERESA-MAY

Despite claims she would be confronted with a demand to switch to a Canada-style free trade deal approach at a Cabionter meeting yesterday afternoon, the Prime Minister's colleagues have rallied around her - at least for now.

A threatened rebellion from Brexiteer ministers demanding that Mrs May seek a looser, Canada-style deal with the European Union failed to materialise after she told colleagues to hold their nerve in the face of opposition from Brussels.

After she was rebuffed by other European Union leaders who told her last week that her Brexit plans would not work, May told her ministers that they must hold their nerve in the impasse, her office said after Monday's Cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, ministers have warned of the risk of disruption to flights in the event of the United Kingdom leaving without a deal.

With a bloc of Tory Brexiteers also committed to opposing the plan, and a number of pro-EU MPs also highly critical, it is increasingly hard to see how she can muster the numbers to get it through Parliament, even it she can get an agreement with the EU.

Pro-Brexit Cabinet Ministers, including International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt and Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey, are being monitored closely by No 10 for signs they could resign if no alternative to Chequers is presented.

'This is about how you can have a fantastic Brexit that sets us up for the next generation and ensures our prosperity, ' he said.

"I am told not a single minister challenged the PM over Chequers during Cabinet today", the Sun's political editor, Tom Newton Dunn, said on Twitter.

"From day one, the prime minister has looked incapable of delivering a good Brexit deal for Britain", Corbyn said.

The BBC also reported that the cabinet remained fully behind May's Brexit policy in the face of growing calls within her party to change direction.

Mrs May said the Government's White Paper remained the only plan on the table which achieves the goals of frictionless trade and an open border in Ireland.

She added that the government would still continue to prepare for the possibility of "no-deal" Brexit.

Pet owners could have to make preparations with their vets four months in advance of a trip to Europe.

May's aides have reportedly already begun to draw up contingency plans for a snap election, the Sunday Times reported, citing two senior members at Downing Street.
