Philippine senator critical of Duterte arrested

Senator Antonio Trillanes was arrested on charges of rebellion

"Democracy died today", Philippine news site Rappler quoted Trillanes as saying shortly before his arrest.

"The amnesty granted to Mr. Trillanes is void", Calida said.

The trial court said with Trillanes' amnesty being declared void "ab initio", it has regained jurisdiction to hear and resolve the case despite its dismissal on September 7, 2011. "Whatever happens in the future is in the hands of the Filipino people".

Trillanes, a former naval officer, was involved in the Oakwood mutiny in July 2003, the Marines standoff in February 2006, and the Manila Peninsula incident in 2007 - which were all against then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Trillanes has proved to be one of Duterte's most vocal critics, accusing the president and his son of large-scale corruption and involvement in illegal drugs, which Duterte has denied.

"However, Senator Trillanes thru his counsel failed to convince this Court that he indeed complied with the minimum requirement to personally fill-up and file the official amnesty application form as required in Section 5,6, and 11 of DND (Department of National Defense) Amnesty Committee Circular Dated December 21, 2010", Judge Alameda pointed out.

Trillanes past year appealed to the International Criminal Court to investigate killings in Duterte's war on drugs and had repeatedly accused the president of being a mass murderer and holding secret bank accounts.

Antonio Trillanes IV in Camp Crame, Quezon City after a Makati court issued an arrest warrant against the lawmaker. He refused to comment on whether he thinks Soriano would also issue an arrest warrant against Trillanes.

The lawyers' group said the move against Trillanes "runs roughshod over the constitutional guarantee against double jeopardy", or holding a person to answer twice for the same offense.

His arrest is "the latest in the relentless campaign to silence those who dared to challenge the president's murderous "drug war, '" Carlos Conde, a researcher at Human Rights Watch's Asia Division, said in a statement".

Duterte has been increasingly sensitive to criticism, especially over his brutal war on drugs, which has left thousands of mostly poor suspects dead since he took office in mid-2016. Trillanes and opposition groups have dismissed the claim as a lie and asked him to focus instead on addressing poverty, inflation, rice shortages, traffic jams and a decline in the value of the peso currency.
