Philadelphia's new mascot more terrifying than Broad Street Bullies

Could 'Gritty' be the scariest mascot ever

The Philadelphia Flyers unveiled their first mascot in more than four decades Monday, and it may be the most frightening thing to come to sporting arenas since the original Pierre the Pelican.

The 7-foot tall fuzzy orange creature has googly eyes and a squeaky belly button. No one can seem to decide whether he looks more like former Flyers winger Scott Hartnell or Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner.

His father was a "bully", so naturally he has some of those tendencies - talented but feisty, a fierce competitor, known for his agility given his size.

Some people saw Gritty's creepy mug and sprang into action with a parody GoFundMe campaign called Euthanize Gritty, the Flyers Mascot. He's loyal but mischievous; the ultimate Flyers fan who loves the orange and black, but is unwelcoming to anyone who opposes his team.

According to a release form the Flyers, "Gritty" was forced out of a hermit-like existence when construction at the Wells Fargo Center disturbed his secret hideout. He has some oddities that are both humorous and unusual. "First and foremost, the Flyers [added] a mascot specifically for our young fans, and we're excited to add value to their experience both at games and in their communities".
