New Zealand's 'first baby' Neve Te Aroha goes to the UN

Jacinda Ardern sat down with co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie for a few questions on NBC's Today show

Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the United Nations was delighted to see baby Neve in the General Assembly hall.

She became the first New Zealand prime minister to give birth whilst in office, and the second ever elected head of government to do so, after the late Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto had her first daughter, Bakhtawar, in 1990.

Ms Ardern, 38, spoke at the United Nations General Assembly hall for the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit on Monday morning, NY time.

Jacinda looked loving at her adorable baby girl.

Asked by the Today show on the US NBC network if it was harder to govern New Zealand or take her daughter on a 17-hour flight, Ardern responded with a laugh and said "It felt at the time on par" and said she had apologised to her fellow passengers in advance.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has made her debut speech at the United Nations in NY - and in another first for the organisation she brought her baby along too, it said, adding that Ms Ardern played with daughter Neve Te Aroha, shortly before addressing the UN's General Assembly.

Kavanaugh: I won't be intimidated into withdrawing nomination
Ramirez waited until Kavanaugh was nominated for the Supreme Court, which is very convenient timing. The second claim against Kavanaugh dates to his first year at Yale University.

Her partner Clarke Gayford, who is the baby's full-time caregiver, sat with the New Zealand delegation and held Neve as Ms Ardern spoke. A short time later the pair announced they were expecting their first child.

Gayford posted a photo on Twitter on Monday of Neve's security pass, which reads "first baby". "Great yarn for her 21st", Gayford added. The UN even mocked up a security pass for her, which refers to her by her proper title of "New Zealand First Baby".

Ardern said they had not committed to taking their daughter to any official events, and they were "playing it by ear" depending on how she was affected by the travel.

Ardern has been juggling both the Prime Ministership and motherhood since Neve was born three months ago, which is a pretty extraordinary feat.

The spokesperson said just 5 percent of the world's leaders were women, so the United Nations needed to make them as welcome as possible. I have the ability to take my child to work.

Singapore's The Straits Times carried copy from news agency AFP that ran: "New Zealand's prime minister, who shot to worldwide fame for giving birth while in office, turned heads on Monday (Sept 24) by bringing her three-month-old daughter into the United Nations assembly hall".
