Brett Kavanaugh: New Sexual Assault Allegation Against Supreme Court Nominee Surfaces

Brett Kavanaugh with his wife Ashley Estes Kavanaugh answers questions during a FOX News interview Monday Sept. 24 2018 in Washington about allegations of sexual misconduct against the Supreme Court nominee

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, among those pressing for a quick vote on Kavanaugh's nomination, on Monday referred to Ramirez's allegation as "phony".

"Oh, gee, let's not make him a Supreme Court judge because of that?" The Judiciary panel said it had talked to three other people who Ford has told The Washington Post were at the party where the alleged assault took place - Mark Judge, Patrick J. Smyth and Leland Ingham Keyser.

Trump's latest comments came amid fresh acrimony among Democratic and Republican senators as they prepare for a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday featuring testimony from Ford, a professor in California, and Kavanaugh.

He has denied both accusations.

Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee has said there is no corroboration over claims he sexually assaulted a woman at a party during high school.

The authors of the article, Ronan Farrow and Jane Meyer, say that after interviewing more than 36 people The New Yorker couldn't find anyone who would confirm the accuser's allegation.

"What I know is the truth, and the truth is I've never sexually assaulted anyone", Kavanaugh told Fox News' Martha MacCallum in an exclusive interview on Monday. "Facts matter", said McConnell, who like other Republicans, has rejected Democratic calls for the FBI to investigate the allegations.

On Monday the organization released a statement calling for Kavanaugh to withdraw his nomination.

Kavanaugh has called Ford's allegation "completely false" and in a statement provided by the White House Sunday night said the incident described by Ramirez "did not happen".

In a speech Tuesday on the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., cast Kavanaugh as a victim of "unsubstantiated smears", arguing that Democrats have scuttled any presumption of innocence for a distinguished jurist.

White House spokeswoman Kerri Kupec called the new allegation part of a "coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man".

"She said well it might not be him, and there were gaps, and she was totally inebriated and all messed up", Trump told reporters. Ford has accused Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her when both were in high school and at a party in the early 1980s; she came forward in an article published September 16. She accused him of attacking her and trying to remove her clothing while he was drunk at a party when he was 17 years old and she was 15. Several Republicans on the committee have said they want to vote on Kavanaugh's nomination shortly after the Thursday hearing.

Ford's lawyers said "various senators have been dismissive of her account and should have to shoulder their responsibility to ask her questions". Ford alleges that Judge was in the room when Kavanaugh assaulted her. Avenatti says there is evidence that in high school Kavanugh and Judge would target women with drugs and alcohol in order to allow men to gang rape them.

"I just wanted to say that this may be the first time we've ever heard of allegations against someone as a teenager who did not prey upon women thusly as he became powerful", Conway said.

Kavanaugh was questioned by committee staff last week.

Asked then about the possibility of Ramirez testifying, Trump continued.

To be confirmed, Kavanaugh will need the approval of 50 senators.

He said he "always treated women with respect" - even telling the Trump-friendly Fox News Channel that he had been a virgin for "many years" after high school.
