The tornado was one of two to hit Ottawa as a line of severe storms moved through during the afternoon, leaving at least four people with serious injuries.

The tornadoes ripped through Ottawa on Friday, specifically the neighbourhood of Dunrobin, about 35 kilometres west of Ottawa's downtown, before moving to Gatineau.

Both Hydro One and Hydro Quebec are still showing hundreds of power outages.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also tweeted Saturday that he'd spoken with the mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau to offer federal assistance.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford visited the affected area on Sunday, where he thanked first responders and local politicians for their well-organized response.

At the same time high winds also battered the region and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said it could be days before electricity was fully restored.

Approximately 60 buildings were wiped out or partially destroyed in Dunrobin, Ont., while in Gatineau more than 215 buildings were damaged or destroyed.

Glenn Johnson, who lives in the west end of Ottawa, says a construction crew that arrived at his home on Sunday morning told him it will be months before the repairs can be completed.

Mr. Johnson and his partner, Pam Cogan, were at home Friday when the tornado warning sounded on their cellphones. They gathered their cats and dogs and ran for the basement, but just as they reached the door to the lower floor, the kitchen window imploded, sending glass flying to the front of the house. Then they emerged to a changed world.

The roof was sheared off, the second storey of the edifice was gone.

Anthony Di Monte, general manager of the City of Ottawa's Emergency and Protective Service, said that more than 400 traffic lights continue to be out.

Amid the devastation, there have been many tales of kindness. A lot of people have been stepping up to help storm victims with a hot meal, an outlet to charge their phone or a shower.
