UK's Labour opposition says it might back new Brexit vote

September 23 2018 12:01am The Sunday Times The forward march of Labour’s left

Opponents say this is part of an effort to purge "Blairites" and other critics of leader Jeremy Corbyn from the party, while supporters of the change say it will help a new generation of Labour MPs emerge.

Outside the arena in Liverpool where Labour is meeting, protesters - who are planning on picketing the conference all week - said the party had pulled off a "fudge".

"We are potentially close to a general election, maybe any day", he said.

His comments came as a poll for The Observer found 86% of Labour members think voters should have the final say on the outcome of Brexit negotiations, and 90% would now vote to remain in the EU.

The 'six tests' comprise a series of metrics put forward by Labour's Brexit shadow minister, Sir Keir Starmer, that provide the party with a framework by which to judge their support for Theresa May's plans.

Mr Umunna, a leading member of the cross-party People's Vote campaign for a referendum on the final Brexit deal, which staged a march in Liverpool on Sunday, wants the option of staying in the European Union to be put before voters.

"Our preference would be for a general election and we can then negotiate our future relationship with Europe but let's see what comes out of conference", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, saying Labour was ready to vote against any deal.

The Labour leader said today that he would prefer forcing a general election this autumn instead of a second referendum but promised to "adhere to what members want".

MP Luciana Berger, a target of insults and death threats on social media, called for Labour to clean house and investigate reported cases of anti-Semitism through a "faster, fairer, more transparent system".

To drive home the message, several thousand People's Vote supporters marched through Liverpool on Sunday, waving blue-and-yellow EU flags alongside Union Jacks and holding signs reading "Exit from Brexit" and a few ruder slogans. Secondly, it will only look at backing another referendum if no snap general election takes place.

According to sources, reported in The Sunday Times, she was warned by members of her party that she should change her stance on the negotiations in time for their pary conference at the weekend or risk a leadership challenge.

People protest against Brexit during the Labour party's annual conference.

"My big worry is that if we go for a referendum which is seen as just a simple re-run we could divide the country again, we could get nearly the same result or if it's slightly different that people demand another referendum".

"Get behind the party that made you, and join the rest of this movement in fighting to get rid of this rotten government, to give our country the fresh start it needs and make Jeremy Corbyn the people's prime minister".

"Anyone screaming "you are a racist" at Jeremy Corbyn has lost any sense of moral proportion and every shred of decency as well", he said to cheers from the Labour faithful. "And if they didn't where would we be then?"
