Rate of Americans living with Alzheimer's expected to double by 2060

Five common misconceptions about Alzheimer's explained

World Alzheimer's Day, which is observed on September 21, is an worldwide campaign aimed at raising awareness and to challenge the common stigma that surrounds Alzheimer's.

The population isn't just aging - it's growing, as babies are born and people live longer.

A precursor to Alzheimer's disease is dementia, and it has been found in clinical practices that if the warning signs are picked up early, it helps in the overall management of the disease.

But that number is estimated to increase to 13.9 million by 2060, equaling almost 3.3 percent of a projected population of 417 million people. In order for people who don't have Alzheimer's symptoms to participate in studies, they'll need to be tested for some of the telltale markers of susceptibility to the disease. The researchers suppose Hispanic Americans will have the highest escalation because of the anticipated population growth in the forthcoming decades.

2014 witnessed 5 million people in the US with Alzheimer's disease and associated dementias, about 1.6 percent of the USA population. For example, elephants, socially driven herd animals that possess extraordinary late-life memory in their massive brains, have also offered some clues about why the Alzheimer's rate in climbing in the U.S. Several studies have shown that Americans who suffer from social disengagement in older age are more susceptible to mental deterioration. Among Hispanics, 12.2 percent were diagnosed with these conditions, along with 10.3 percent of whites and 9.1 percent of American Indian and Alaska natives. It is because of Alzheimer's disease.

The health, social and economic costs of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) among older Americans are projected to double by 2060, according to new research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "An early assessment and diagnosis is key to planning for their health care needs, including long-term services and supports, as the disease progresses", said lead author Kevin Matthews, health geographer with the CDC's Division of Population Health.

"Although the primary risk factor for ADRD [Alzheimer's disease and related dementias] is age, race and ethnicity is also an important demographic risk factor", the study notes.

In the meantime, the Alzheimer's Association estimates that the best way to save $7.9 trillion in expenses for treating and caring for dementia patients is to improve diagnoses and make sure they happen as early as possible.

Dementia is over 40 percent more common in women.
