Labour 'could win 1.5m more votes' by backing Brexit referendum

Warrington Guardian

The claims emerge as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he plans to side with Tory Brexit rebels to force Mrs May into a general election as early as November.

She said she would prefer for there to be an election in the event Prime Minister Theresa May failed to get her Brexit deal through parliament.

Labour is poised to back a second referendum after Jeremy Corbyn confirmed he is prepared to commit to a major policy shift if the party's members vote for it.

But, he said, if Labour's conference "make a decision, I will not walk away from it and I will act accordingly".

Mr Watson acknowledged there was "always a danger" that the resolution could be a fudge but "when it comes to a second referendum I'm sure there will be words on offer that will allow the party to come to a fixed view on that".

His comments came as a poll for The Observer found 86% of Labour members think voters should have the final say on the outcome of Brexit negotiations, and 90% would now vote to remain in the EU.

"By ensuring businesses reserve a third of board seats for workers, we'll help transform our broken economic model", said Corbyn, who has shifted Labour towards the hard left since being elected party chief in 2015.

He said: "Of the respondents who now support Labour and voted leave in the Brexit referendum, only 6% put Brexit at the top of their concerns and say they would not, or be less likely to, vote Labour if the party backed a popular vote".

People's Vote is holding a march in Liverpool on Saturday to mark the start of the Labour conference, titled the "People's Vote March For the Many".

Ms Butler said: "We are in Liverpool, where over 30 years ago the council stood up to Thatcher and said better to break the law than break the poor".

"I really worry about another referendum", said Mr McDonnell.

Prior to his announcement, which came in an interview with the Mirror, Corbyn was urged to back members of his party by Labour deputy Tom Watson.

The YouGov survey of 1,054 Labour members found even in the North and Midlands, where many Labour constituencies voted Leave, there was overwhelming support for a second referendum.

The rally was punctuated by cries of "stop Brexit" from the audience, but most speakers steered clear of the topic, ahead of a conference which Labour wants to focus on housing and workplace rights.
