Graham: 'I'm Not Going To Ruin Judge Kavanaugh's Life Over This'

Republicans set afternoon deadline for Kavanaugh accuser to decide to testify

As the Senate Judiciary Committee staff negotiates with attorneys for Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of a past sexual assault, over a potential hearing on Thursday, Republican staffers are working to interview those who may have information about the alleged incident.

The Republican majority on the judiciary committee had been arguing with Ford's lawyers about the details of Ford's appearance before the committee, such as the day of the hearing and how many cameras would be allowed into the chamber. Reportedly, she is a lifelong friend of Blasey (now, Blasey Ford).

"I want to listen to her, but I'm being honest with you and everybody else".

Judge Kavanaugh has remained mostly silent.

Lawyers for Christine Blasey Ford said she accepted the Senate Judiciary Committee's request to appear before them to be questioned on the alleged attack at a party in 1982.

Regardless of whether sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh stick or not, Danielle McLaughlin says the Republican Party is unlikely to come out of this saga unscathed.

Durbin indicated that Democrats are likely to ask about Kavanaugh's drinking history because Ford has alleged Kavanaugh was "stumbling drunk" when it happened.

"Five times now we hv granted extension for Dr Ford to decide if she wants to proceed w her desire stated one wk ago that she wants to tell senate her story Dr Ford if u changed ur mind say so so we can move on I want to hear ur testimony", Grassley tweeted late Friday night.

If Ford doesn't testify on Monday, the public hearing would be canceled. Ford also alleges that Kavanaugh held his hand over her mouth to muffle her screams. Talks were expected to continue on Sunday.

For their part, Democrats say Republicans are mounting an unseemly rush to get Kavanaugh into the nine-member Supreme Court while they still control the legislature. The GOP has faced enormous pressure from its base of conservative leaders and voters to swiftly approve Mr Kavanaugh, who would become the second of Trump's nominees to sit on the nation's highest court.

Donald Trump heads to Carolinas to look at Hurricane Florence damage
But extreme weather can also expose an administration's weaknesses, as Hurricane Katrina did for President George W. They can't say for certain what it might do", Conway resident Joe Holmes told the AP on Monday.

Significantly, by submitting statements to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kavanaugh, Judge, Smyth, and Keyser have all subjected themselves to legal jeopardy under federal law, which makes it a crime to make "any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation" to a Senate committee conducting an official investigation.

White House leakers suggested over the weekend that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is struggling with questions about his personal life in prep sessions for upcoming testimony, possibly paving the way to withdraw his nomination.

While Kavanaugh is eager to testify and clear his name, an associate told the Post he is becoming "incredibly frustrated" by continued stories about his family.

Earlier, Trump had said Ford should be heard, even if it meant a delay in the confirmation process.

In requesting another day to decide, Katz called Grassley's original deadline "arbitrary" and said its "sole goal is to bully Dr. Ford and deprive her of the ability to make a considered decision that has life-altering implications for her and her family".

Grassley's stance reflected a desire by Trump and GOP leaders to usher Kavanaugh onto the high court by the October 1 start of its new session and before the November elections.

The president's tweet brought blistering rejoinders from Democrats and a mix of silence and sighs of regret from his own party. It's possible, given the anti-Kavanaugh hysteria that has gripped the feminist left, that another accuser might come forward at the last, last minute, but it hasn't happened so far.

After that deadline passed without a resolution, Grassley had issued a statement.

Ms Ford's lawyers previously said she had "been the target of vicious harassment" in the wake of her claims and was forced to leave her home.
