Girl bitten in shark attack in Australia believed to be NZer

A girl has been bitten by a shark in the second Whitsundays attack in 24 hours

Fisheries Department spokesman Jeff Krause said that if a caught shark was deemed to be risky, with a history of attacking humans, it would be "humanely euthanised".

"There's probably four species that could be involved in it, probably the worst of those species would be a tiger shark", he said.

The first shark attack, which left Tasmanian tourist and avid snorkeller Justine Barwick fighting for her life in hospital, was reported just after 5pm (local time) on Wednesday.

Two people, including a young girl, have been attacked by sharks in separate incidents in the same harbor in Australia's Whitsunday Islands in the past 24 hours.

The crew was then called out to the same location a day later after a child was attacked on her upper left leg. RACQ CQ sais that the injury was similar to the previous attack, and the wound went right down to her bone. It is understood a holidaying veterinarian provided critical treatment which made the difference between life and death.

The RACQ CQ Rescue service said she had been travelling on board the vessel Miss Denero in the Whitsundays with her father and sister.

She remained conscious on the flight to Mackay Base Hospital where surgeons were waiting to operate.

Queensland Ambulance Service Mackay operations manager Tracey Eastwick said the girl had been in a critical condition.

"She is an avid snorkeller and enjoys these times away with family and friends", FBC chief executive Douglass Doherty said.

The Queensland government will set three drum lines in the area in a bid to prevent any further attacks.

Three drumlines with baited hooks will be deployed around the region tomorrow morning.

"Shark attacks in these waters are rare".

Both were attacked by a shark at Cid Harbour, with the rescue of both victims conducted by the RACQ CQ chopper.

The Humane International Society will push ahead with court action in a bid to force the removal of shark drums from the north Queensland coastline, despite the near-fatal attacks. People flock to the Great Barrier Reef resort from Australia's southern cities in the winter months.
