Kalpana Lajmi made her debut as an assitant director of filmmaker Shyam Benegal. According to a report in the Quint, "All the medical expenses incurred by Kalpana Lajmi have been taken care of by the Indian Films and Television Directors Association, Aamir Khan and Rohit Shetty".

Veteran director, producer, screenwriter and author Kalpana Lajmi passed away on Sunday, September 23, in Mumbai. Her films often had a woman at the centre. Some of her popular films include Rudaali (1993), Daman (2001), Darmiyaan: In Between (1997).

"Got up to hear the sad news of Kalpana Lajmi's demise". Lajmi was admitted to the (Kokilaben Dhirubhai) Ambani hospital, when she breathed her last at 4.30 am on Sunday. She was suffering from chronic kidney disease and liver failure. She was on dialysis.

"I did speak to her last Sunday and we were supposed to meet on Wednesday, but she was readmitted to the ICU", Razdan told. Taking to Twitter Soni Razdan, Lajmi's long-term friend, wrote, "Our dear beloved friend Kalpana Lajmi has gone to a better place". RIP my darling Kalpana. "I will miss her strong energetic voice, her indefatigable drive to create, her laughter that was always so full of real joy and her wonderful sense of humour".
