Expensive pair of taped sneakers slammed for glorifying poverty

Netizens are slamming these expensive taped sneakers for glorifying poverty

It's the fact the sneakers look like an old battered pair you're most likely to find in a trash can. But the shoes, which are made by Golden Goose, are being criticized on social media for "making light of poverty".

The design is a riff on the "distressed" fashion trend, but some shoppers think that the intentional wear and tear of a pair of brand-new sneakers is in poor taste, especially when seen in the context of those whose shoes look like that because of economic depression as opposed to a style trend.

The pair of sneakers is selling online on American retail chain Nordstrom's website for $530 - that's approximately Rs 38,000!

The Golden Goose sneakers, dubbed the "Superstar Taped Sneaker", boast "Crumply, hold-it-all-together tape" and "a grungy rubber cupsole".

Barneys and Neiman Marcus also carry some of Golden Goose's designs, but the taped sneakers are now not available on their websites.

Some other Twitter users also reiterated that the brand had been designing shoes like this for years.

If the idea of spending over $500 on shoes that are seemingly held together by tape confounds you, you're not alone.

One Twitter user wrote, "There are people in the world wearing plastic bags as shoes because they can't afford any but these ugly things are selling for $500".

Golden Goose has sold other distressed sneakers, though most models haven't featured tape.

As soon as this shoe was released online people started expressing their thought on Twitter, some people went ahead and called the design distasteful and stupid.
