Elite Iranian soldiers killed in attack on military parade

Iran vows 'crushing response' after gunmen kill 29 at army parade

Gunmen attacked a military parade in Ahvaz in southwestern Iran on Saturday in an early morning attack that is one of the bloodiest in decades.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the terrorist attack in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz was the continuation of plots hatched by USA stooges in the region to create insecurity in the country, adding that Iran's intelligence services must swiftly find the accomplices of the "criminals" behind the attack and put them on trial.

An unnamed spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards blamed Arab nationalists, who he said were backed by Saudi Arabia, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

"First we thought it's part of the parade, but after about 10 seconds we realised it was a terrorist attack as bodyguards (of officials) started shooting", he told AFP. Dozens ran, including numerous soldiers present who didn't initially use their weapons to engage the gunmen. "The terrorists had no particular target and didn't really seem to care as they shot anyone they could with rapid gunfire".

Footage on social media showed soldiers and bystanders scattering as shooting broke out at the parade in Ahvaz marking the 38th anniversary of Iraq's 1980 invasion of Iran.

Foreign minister Mohammed Javad Zarif has blamed the attack on "regional terror sponsors".

Iranian state media said that 24 people, including civilians, had been killed.

The state-run IRNA news agency said a woman and a child were also among the wounded. At least 53 others were wounded, including some who were in critical condition.

Islamic State's Amaq agency also said it carried out the attack, but provided no evidence to back the claim.

The BBC reports an Iranian military spokesman claimed the attackers "were trained and organised by two Gulf countries", and had ties to the US and Israel.

The judiciary-linked Mizan news agency said several of the accused were Iranians who had left to join IS in neighbouring countries and then returned.

Khuzestan deputy governor Ali-Hossein Hosseinzadeh told ISNA that "8 to 9" troops were among those killed, as well as a journalist.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday denounced the attack, offering condolences to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and calling for stronger anti-terrorism cooperation.

IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sharif said the attackers were affiliated with a terrorist group supported by Saudi Arabia, Press TV said. It was a major battleground during the war that killed half a million soldiers.

Attacks by Kurdish rebels on military patrols along the border in mainly ethnic Kurdish areas further north are relatively common.

Iran has intervened in the wars in Syria and Iraq and plays an influential role in Yemen, but this was a rare attack on its own soil.

The report Saturday described the assailants as "Takifiri gunmen", a term previously used to describe the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

It coincided with remarks by Iranian president Hassan Rouhani, who said that United States president Donald Trump will fail in his confrontation with Iran, and vowed Tehran will not abandon its missiles.
