U.S. stocks end mixed. Dow another record. Biggest weekly gain since July

Dow, S&P 500 Hit Record Highs Despite Lingering Trade Tensions

The President hailed the news on social media, saying "S&P 500 HITS ALL-TIME HIGH Congratulations USA!"

The S&P 500 and Dow reached record highs on Friday ahead of Monday's major sector reshuffle, capping a week that largely shrugged off trade worries.

The Federal Reserve said Thursday that the value of Americans' stock and mutual fund portfolios rose $800 billion last quarter, helping to boost USA household wealth to a record $106.9 billion in the April-June quarter.

The Dow and S&P 500 each ended the week with their 10th weekly gain in the past 12 weeks. Shares of companies in various sectors of the economy set records on Thursday, evidence that the strong economy is benefiting many industries.

The rally comes between quarterly earnings seasons.

The S&P 500 rose 21 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,929. If 19.9 percent is the actual growth rate for the quarter, it will mark the third-highest earnings growth since the third quarter of 2010 (34.1 percent).

Tech stocks led all three major USA indexes higher in a broad-based rally as trade worries subsided.

An economic index from the Federal Reserve's bank in Philadelphia also topped forecasts, and the Conference Board's index of leading economic indicators, created to anticipate economic conditions three to six months out, rose 0.4 percent last month.

Big technology companies led the charge on Wall Street Thursday as Facebook and Microsoft posted big gains.

"The U.S. retail giant Walmart is reported to have urged the Trump administration to roll back on its new tariffs on Chinese imports".

According to CNBC, the Dow rose 219 points Thursday with the S&P 500 also breaking its previous record.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.04-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.21-to-1 ratio favoured decliners.

Under Armour Inc rose 3 percent following JPMorgan Chase's upgrade.

Analysts attributed the Dow's gains to continued solid USA economic data and greater investor optimism about trade fights after fresh actions from the United States and China were not as severe as they could have been.

The biggest gains went to technology and health care companies and banks. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.7 percent and Tokyo's Nikkei 225 rose 0.8 percent.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,712.32 for a loss of -7.87 points or -0.46%.

Other members of the FAANG group of stocks also rose with Netflix (NFLX.O), Facebook (FB.O), Amazon.com (AMZN.O) and Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL.O) rising between 0.02 percent and 1.3 percent.

A 3.6 percent drop in shares of Micron led chipmakers lower after the company said US tariffs on Chinese goods would weigh on its financial results for as much as a year.
