Taiwan police arrest U.S. 3D-gun maker accused of sex with minor

Cody Wilson

The owner of a Texas company that sells blueprints to make untraceable 3D-printed guns has been arrested in Taiwan.

Wilson, at the center of a US legal battle over his plan to publish instructions for the manufacture of 3-D printed plastic guns, flew into Taiwan legally, the National Immigration Agency said on Friday.

On Wednesday, Trey Officer of the Austin Police Department's organized crime division told reporters that police had begun a manhunt for Wilson who flew to Taipei and cancelled his flight back to the U.S.

Wilson, who is at the center of a USA legal battle over his plan to publish instructions for the manufacture of 3D-printed plastic guns, flew into Taiwan legally, the country's National Immigration Agency said in a statement on Friday.

Wilson and Defense Distributed, the company he helped found, have been the subject of an ongoing court battle over whether the company should be legally allowed to widely disseminate the blueprints for untraceable, 3D-printed weapons online. Officer added that Wilson may have been tipped off that he was wanted by police prior to leaving for Taiwan after "a friend of the victim" told him that authorities "were investigating him for having sex with a minor".

The arrest was reported on Friday morning by a local CBS affiliate in Austin, TX, where police had filed an affidavit against Wilson on Wednesday, alleging that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl he met on a "sugar daddy" website. The National Immigration Agency is now urging the American Institute in Taiwan to issue a valid travel document for Mr Wilson, so he can be deported back to the USA accordingly. Earlier this week, Texas police issued a warrant for his arrest.

The girl, according to the affidavit, said they met in the parking lot of an Austin coffee shop before they drove to the hotel.

According to the affidavit for arrest, Wilson courted the 16-year-old victim on a dating website designed for successful men to meet younger women.

Wilson could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, according to ABC Austin affiliate KVUE-TV. They met in Austin on August 15 where Wilson brought her back to a hotel room. The claim, which was originally reported to police by the victim's counselor, has allegedly been corroborated by multiple surveillance videos.
