Spider Sex Party Covers Greek Beach in 1000-Foot-Long Web

Thousands of spiders descend on Greek town & cover it with 300-meter-long web

Arachnophobics, beware - a massive spider web in a small town in western Greece has blanketed almost a 1,000-foot expanse of the region's coast.

As reported by Daily Hellas, a broad area of greenery has been cloaked by the silvery spider-web produced by Tetragnatha spiders.

While the giant spider-web in Aitoliko, Greece, might look freaky, the phenomenon is not at all harmful for humans, animals in the region, or the local flora.

Greek local and photographer Giannis Giannakopoulos captured stunning photographs and a video of the webs.

The freaky sight was the work of spiders from the genus Tetragnatha - otherwise known as stretch spiders due to their elongated bodies.

The thick, fuzzy covering comes from Tetragnatha spiders, a type of spider that frequents tropical climates, as Maria Chatzaki, a biology professor at Greece's Democritus University of Thrace, told Newsit.

Sadly, the eight-legged architects will soon die off, leaving the web to degrade naturally.

"The spiders will have their party and will soon die", she told Sky News, adding that the phenomenon takes place every few years.

Biologist Fotis Pergantis, president of the region's Messolonghi National Lagoon Park, says the warm weather has led to an increase in the presence of gnats, on which the spiders feed. "This phenomenon has arisen from a population explosion of this spider".

The spiders are not a danger to humans, the report said.

Speaking to Greek news websites, molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki said that the spiders are not unsafe to humans and she not be feared. "They mate, they reproduce and provide a whole new generation".
