Terrorists attack military parade in Iran's Ahvaz

At least eight members of Iran's elite military have been killed with 20 people wounded in a gun attack during a parade in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, local media have said.

"The terrorists disguised as Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and Basiji (volunteer) forces opened fire to the authority and people from behind the stand during the parade", Governor of Khuzestan Gholam-Reza Shariati said, according to the state news agency IRNA.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.

A report on Saturday described the assailants as "Takifiri gunmen", a term used previously to describe the Islamic State group. The agency did not elaborate.

The semi-official ISNA news agency published photographs of the aftermath, with bloodied troops in dress uniforms helping each other away from the scene on Ahvaz's Quds, or Jerusalem Boulevard. In it, paramedics could be seen helping someone in military fatigues laying on the ground.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack in the city of Ahvaz.

"The individuals who fired at the people and the armed forces during the parade are connected to the al-Ahvaziya group which is fed by Saudi Arabia", Sharif said.

Iran is conducating nationwide military parades to mark the beginning of the Sacred Defense Week. The province in the past has seen Arab separatists attack oil pipelines.
