Massive spiderweb blankets Greek beach for spider sex 'party'

Spider webs have cloaked the riverside area in the western Greek town. Pic Giannis Giannakopoulos

Giannakopoulos said it appeared the spiders were gathering on the eastern side of the beach, adding there was a "huge veil" of them covering palm trees and other vegetation.

An increase in the mosquito population is also thought to have contributed to a large number of spiders in the region.

However, Daily Hellas revealed that the rather eerie scene is a yearly sight for the residents of Aitoliko.

Thankfully, the webs won't be around to menace the people of Aitoliko forever, according to Maria Chatzaki, a professor of molecular biology and genetics at Democritus University in Thrace, Greece.

The last time such a phenomenon occurred was in 2003 and, while experts said it is not uncommon, it is still enough to give arachnophobes the shivers.

Sadly, the eight-legged architects will soon die off, leaving the web to degrade naturally.

In 2007, a town in Dallas, Texas found cobwebs the length of a football field in a park, enticing thousands of visitors from all over the country.

The warmer climate conditions in western Greece have led to a freaky phenomenon. They are sometimes referred to as stretch spiders due to their "stretched" appearance.

They are known to build webs near watery habitats, with some species even said to be able to walk on water.

Humans have nothing to fear.

Recently, the weather has been very hot and humid, which leads to more gnats and mosquitos, which are the favored food of these spiders.
