Mr Quang had been serving as president since April 2016.
In May, at the time of the Vietnamese Communist Party's Seventh Plenum, The Diplomat reported that there were rumors Quang would be replaced "on account of health".
"However, despite all the efforts of the leading domestic and foreign physicians, he failed to recover", Vietnam's healthcare division of central officials said in the report.

Born in northern Ninh Binh province, Quang attended a police college and rose through the ranks at the powerful Ministry of Public Security before being appointed minister in 2011.
Vietnam cancelled at least one oil drilling project in the resource-rich region during Quang's tenure in an apparent bid to quell tensions.
Quang hosted President Donald Trump during his first state visit to the communist country past year, when Trump attended a summit of Pacific Rim leaders.
As president, he oversaw a crackdown on dissidents that rights groups have decried as a chokehold on free expression.
