What will life be like after Hurricane Florence — WHAT'S HAPPENING

Coal ash landfill collapses in North Carolina after torrential rain from Florence

Thom Tillis and Richard Burr, both North Carolina Republicans, and Sens.

Hurricane Florence's rainfall has stopped, but its "nightmare" destruction isn't over yet.

After submerging North Carolina with almost 3 feet of rain, the storm dumped more than 6.5 inches of rain in the Northeast, where it caused flash flooding. Some 10,000 people remained in shelters.

It was the same message at Trump's first stop in North Carolina, where Gov. Roy Cooper and federal and state officials briefed the president at a Marine Corps air station in Havelock, which sits among areas Florence hit hardest. So far, twenty-seven people are reported to have died from the storm and the resulting flooding, a dam has failed, a coal ash landfill has collapsed, and millions of chickens and thousands of hogs have drowned.

More than 1,100 roads were still closed across North Carolina, Cooper said, including several portions of interstates 40 and 95.

The president assured locals that federal funding would be available.

"America grieves with you and our hearts break for you". "You take care of yourself", he said. "To all those impacted by this bad storm, our entire American family is with you and ready to help".

Authorities say two female inmates being transported to a mental health facility in SC drowned in rising flood waters after the van they were in was swept away.

At the closed Sutton plant, Duke spokeswoman Paige Sheehan said a full assessment of how much ash escaped from the water-slogged landfill can't occur until the rain stops.

Many were outside enjoying the handsome weather Wednesday, he said.

During major storms, uncovered lagoons can fill up with rain and overflow, or they can be flooded out by rising waters.

Trump promised, "Whatever we have to do at the federal level, we will be there".

Florence has claimed eight lives in SC thus far, and flooding is expected to worsen later this week and into next. "Businesses are returning to normal". "Amazing. Just days before this #ConwaySC neighborhood was completely underwater - now floodwaters from #Florence have receded and the road is back open again". That's double the amount that were killed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, and the numbers are expected to continue climbing.

"You've broken all records - this is going to add 4, 5, 6 feet of water all over the state", he said. You're going to need it. "We are anxious about Friday".

"It's going to get rough for SC", he warned ahead of the expected cresting of rivers.

"We've never had it at those levels before, so we don't really know what the impact will be just yet", he said.

They passed a vehicle buried in floodwaters and called out to see if anyone was in it.

"How's the house?" he asked one person.

The city manager told CNN that 12,000 people were "in harm's way". "It's just hard to explain".

"We started early, we'll be here late", Trump said.

The death toll rose to at least 37 in three states Tuesday, with 27 fatalities in North Carolina, as Florence's remnants went in two directions: Water flowed downstream toward the Carolina coast, and storms raced through the Northeast and in to the Atlantic.

Richardson says the incident happened near the Little Pee Dee River, which is one of the bodies of water officials are monitoring for intense flooding following Florence. "It is a storm like no other".

Many of those waterways are rising or cresting in the Carolinas, though a few were receding.

"There's no easy fix for this and I know there's a lot of people who lost their homes", she said. "Please.do not try to return home yet".

He said his state now has 13 rivers at major flood stage, with 7,800 residents in shelters and almost 200,000 customers still without power.

"This is home", Bowen said. The dump is adjacent to the Waccamaw River, which is expected to crest at almost 20 feet (6 meters) this weekend.
