Mercedes leaks images of Project One prototype on the track

Mercedes-AMG A35

Several new pictures of the Mercedes-AMG A35 have surfaced online, ahead of the model's unveiling at the Paris Motor Show.

Auto companies usually do their best to prevent images of prototypes leaking out to the media, but the distinctive sound of the Project One's V6 turbo-hybrid F1 engine meant that it was becoming increasingly hard to keep the car's testing under wraps.

The tests at Millbrook are part of a second phase of road testing, however, with a mule reportedly having first trodden tarmac earlier this year in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, where the vehicle is being developed by AMG's F1 boffins at its High Performance Powertrains centre. The electro-mechanical steering uses variable assistance and a more rigid mounting than the system used by other new A-class models.

The development of the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE show vehicle, presented at IAA 2017, had been intensively worked on behind closed doors for several months.

I will not go into details describing how the auto looks like, we have pictures.

Lewis Hamilton has his name down to be one of the first customers to receive a Project One, which will cost somewhere in excess of £2 million. The vehicle comes with updated styling, a host of new features, and more powerful engine options.

That means it is capable of producing over 1000bhp from the same 1.6-litre, V6 turbo-hybrid design - albeit revving to 11,000rpm rather than the 13,500rpm redline of the F1 unit. The 4MATIC system can spend power to the front wheels only or split it 50:50 between front and back wheels.

Hundreds of testing hours have already been spent to master the vast challenge of making the high-performance drive unit ready for series production: the whole powertrain including all hybrid components underwent the toughest race track tests on the high-performance dyno tests of HPP's engine specialists in Brixworth. That's easier said than done given the normal requirement for an F1 powertrain to be maintained on life support throughout a race weekend.

Just 275 examples will be built and they're all sold. Production of the cars themselves is expected to take place at a dedicated factory in the United Kingdom.
