People work during a rescue and retrieval operation for landslide victims caused by Typhoon Mangkhut

Mangkhut, a super typhoon that slammed into the northern Philippine province of Luzon on Saturday, continued a path of destruction across southern China on Sunday and into Monday. In the Philippines, the police on Monday gave an unofficial death toll of 66 people nationwide, though that number was nearly certain to rise.

Philippine and Chinese authorities said the death toll from the typhoon has risen to at least 69, with dozens more people missing.

The AP reports that the storm has killed at least 66 people in the Philippines.

Dozens of residents sought shelter during the storm on Saturday despite warning it was risky.

"The rescue effort will continue until the president orders us to stop", he said. They insisted. They were resisting when our police tried to pull them away. "What can we do?"

The government and casinos took extra measures ahead of the storm, determined to avoid a repeat of Typhoon Hato which battered Macau previous year, killing 12 people and drawing accusations the city was ill-prepared.

But rescuers are still digging through the massive mound of mud and debris covering a chapel where they had sheltered.

Itogon resident Roel Ullani helped search for the missing, including several of his cousins and other relatives.

Trump administration cutting number of new refugees to 4-decade low

His environment minister, Roy Cimatu, earlier ordered a halt of all small-scale mining activities in the mountainous region following the landslides. Tens of thousands of small-time miners in recent years have come to the mountain provinces from the lowlands and established communities in high-risk areas like the mountain foothills of Itogon.

As of Monday morning Mangkhut was on track to pass over the Guangxi regional capital of Nanning and move toward the border with tourism powerhouse Yunnan province. While the island avoided serious casualties, it suffered significant damage.

In Hong Kong, which was whacked with gusts of more than 230 kilometres per hour (142 mph) that sent buildings swaying and water surging into homes and shopping malls, workers were still busy cleaning up the damage.

Rail, airline and ferry services were restored and casinos in the gambling enclave of Macau reopened.

Global cruise calls are back on track at Hong Kong after the territory was battered by the worst storm of the year on Sunday with gusts of up to 160 mph/ 257 km/h reported.

"This typhoon really was super strong ... but overall, I feel we can say we got through it safely", Carrie Lam, the territory's chief executive, told reporters.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) raised the storm signal to T10 - the highest level possible - Sunday morning local time, with the city nearly entirely shut down.
