Ford wants her Kavanaugh claim investigated before hearing

U.S. Senate Judiciary to probe Kavanaugh, accuser in public hearing

When news broke that Christine Blasey Ford-a 51-year-old professor of psychology at Palo Alto University in Northern California-had accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her at a party back in 1982, numerous responses were fair-minded and even-handed. Considering that Ford is making a very serious accusation and that Kavanaugh, if confirmed, could still be on the Supreme Court 30 years from now, anything the Palo Alto University professor has to say on the matter should be heard publicly.

Democrats on the committee say Grassley is rushing the confirmation process and are calling on the FBI to reopen Kavanaugh's background investigation, which would include questioning Kavanaugh, Ford, and Judge on the incident.

The move would delay a planned vote in the Judiciary Committee on Thursday to advance Kavanaugh's confirmation.

As Senate majority leader, Kentucky's Mitch McConnell has been a ruthless, vindictive partisan whose top priority is sticking it to Democrats-not the wellbeing of the country. It was unclear whether that goal would have to be adjusted.

"We've not heard from them", Grassley said on the "The Hugh Hewitt Show". "Brett Kavanaugh and I were friends in high school but I do not recall the party described in Dr. Ford's letter".

Democrats, already fiercely opposed to the nominee, have also been seeking an FBI investigation, a request that Republicans have rebuffed. The point is this: Republican (and Democratic) senators should have as their first and only priority getting as close to the truth of the allegations made by Ford against Kavanaugh as possible.

Democrats, already fiercely opposed to Kavanaugh, whose confirmation could consolidate the conservative grip on the top US court, had demanded a delay in the committee's vote to let the FBI investigate. "The invitation for Monday (Sept. 24) still stands".

But the separate argument that the specific allegations themselves, involving high school students in a social setting, are too distant or trivial to have any bearing on Kavanaugh's nomination, continues to get heavy play.

Democrats decried Republicans' plans to push ahead with the hearing without seeking a full FBI investigation.

The Justice Department asked Tesla for documents about Musk's announcement, Tesla said , describing it as a "voluntary request". Earlier today, news broke that the Saudi Arabia's foreign wealth fund had invested up to $1billion in a Tesla competitor, Lucid.

The Republican leader criticized Democrats for sitting on the information during weeks of debate on Kavanaugh's nomination.

Oddly, it remained unclear whether Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who set off the controversy over Trump's nominee, would appear at Monday's Judiciary Committee hearing.

Kavanaugh, 53, was at the White House on Tuesday for a second straight day, but again did not meet with Trump. Trump and other Republicans said they did not think the Federal Bureau of Investigation needed to be involved.

She added, "One of the things I know is what happens to women in this situation and how hard it is, and I hope people will let her be".

President Donald Trump gave Kavanaugh a ringing new endorsement Tuesday, saying he felt "so badly" that Kavanaugh is facing scrutiny over allegations that he assaulted a teenage girl when both were in high school.

"She has been the target of vicious harassment and even death threats", Ford's lawyers wrote in their letter. His work has also appeared in Salon, Raw Story, Truthdig, National Memo, Philadelphia Weekly, Democratic Underground, L.A. Weekly, MintPress News and many other publications. Without Kennedy on the court, the justices are split 4-4 between liberals and conservatives. White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told reporters Monday that the accuser's allegations should be heard by the Senate. Ford said in an interview with the Washington Post Sunday that she was previously reluctant to come forward with her story because she believed that it would not affect his confirmation. "I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the Committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity".

Republicans are suggesting that Ford will have one chance to testify, and one chance only.

On Tuesday Trump doubled down on backing Kavanaugh despite a woman claiming he tried to rape her in the 1980s.

Katz told CBS that Ford had consumed a beer but was not drunk. What's more, Ford's past statements about the alleged episode aren't proof of wrongdoing.
