Elizabeth Smart Kidnapper to Leave Utah Prison Wednesday

Elizabeth Smart recalls her kidnapper Wanda Barzee's apology, questions her sincerity

Wanda Barzee, the woman who helped her husband kidnap Elizabeth Smart in 2002, is set to be released from prison Wednesday. "And I just knew that she - she wasn't there to help me, that she wasn't there to protect me", Smart told CBS in a Tuesday morning interview while describing Barzee, who was complicit in Smart's 2002 kidnapping.

Barzee was serving a 15-year sentence when the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole unexpectedly credited her with 2,436 days for time served, moving up her release date from 2024.

Smart says she has reason to believe "evil and twisted" Barzee could end up in prison again soon after she walks free and that Barzee still carries a book written by her husband, detailing Mitchell's plans to kidnap Smart and other young girls.

According to conditions of release that Barzee agreed to in 2010, she must report to a probation officer each month and she can not leave the Salt Lake City area without permission.

Barzee was denied parole in July for the second time because she refused to be evaluated by a prison psychologist. "So, do I believe that she is unsafe?" And when I woke up the next morning, I mean, my face and my hair were completely crusted to the ground.

"It shouldn't happen if I was an innocent 14-year-old girl or a girl working the corner", she said.

Smart, now the mother of two, said that during her time in captivity she maintained a pinprick of hope despite repeated sexual assault. "Ms. Barzee cannot legally be held in the Utah State prison beyond the length of her sentence".

"She's got nowhere to go", she said.

Mcdonald's plans strike to raise awareness for sexual harassment
McDonald's workers in Kansas City joined a nationwide strike Tuesday protesting sexual harassment within the fast food chain. Since fast food frequently employs young people (often as their first job), numerous victims are teenagers.

Once the five year period ends, Smart, now 30, can ask a judge for a protective order to prevent Barzee from contacting her.

Smart was held by Mitchell and Barzee for nine months in Utah and California before her rescue in 2003.

"Perhaps that's what worries me, because I know just how bad she really can be".

Elizabeth was just 14 when she was taken.

Smart may not believe Barzee is remorseful, but she has forgiven her captor. Smart made that decision a long time ago, she said.

Barzee's attorney, Scott Williams, has confirmed that Barzee has been diagnosed with several mental illnesses, but he's said he's not concerned about her being a danger to the community.

Additionally, Barzee will have to register as a sex offender. One month after Mitchell and Barzee kidnapped Smart, the couple tried to break into the house where Smart's cousin lived, prosecutors and police said. Smart was walking alongside Barzee and Mitchell when police stopped them. She is expected to be released this week. Sure enough, it was Barzee, Mitchell and Smart.

Smart is pregnant with her third child.
