Deadly Typhoon Mangkhut lashes Hong Kong, China; dozens dead in Philippines

People walk through floodwaters caused by Typhoon Mangkhut

On Saturday, it plowed into the Philippines, killing at least two people and flattening homes in small towns and villages on the northern island of Luzon.

Teams are raking through the rubble with their bare hands, passing blocks of concrete and pieces of wood down a 50ft line to clear the area.

Videos posted by residents showed the incredible power of the typhoon as it caused buildings to sway, sucked reams of documents out of the shattered office windows, tore down scaffolding and pushed walls of water into low-lying parts of the island.

Of the four fatalities in Guangdong, three died after they were hit by falling trees in Guangzhou while another was killed when a building collapsed in Dongguan. In the Philippines, where most of the deaths have occurred, a landslide caused by the storm is mainly to blame.

"It was used as a worship area for the church group of the mine workers and their families", said Mr Navidad, who was at the scene earlier. "For me, it will just be retrievals", he said.

Philippine officials said the Itogon landslide was near a gold mine operating illegally in the area.

Jerome Balinton, a spokesman for Save the Children who was on the ground in north-eastern Luzon, said: "The further north we travelled the more extensive the damage, particularly in Cagayan province".

Typhoon Mangkhut barreled into southern China on September 16 after lashing the northern Philippines with strong winds and heavy rain that left more than dozens dead from landslides and drownings. It made landfall on the Chinese coast on Sunday.

The storm has been downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm.

"The landslides happened as some residents returned to their homes after the typhoon", disaster response coordinator Francis Tolentino told DZMM Radio, adding that most of the 5.7 million people affected had made advance preparations.

The transport disruptions were expected to persist over the week ahead, although most ferry operators, franchised buses on 120 out of more than 600 routes, and minibuses on 600 out of 655 routes, had resumed services by late afternoon.

The city managed to avoid serious casualties but now faces a hard recovery as thousands remain affected by flooding and travel disruptions.

While it avoided a direct hit, winds there reached more than 110mph and water levels surged by nearly 3.5m in places.

Hong Kong residents were told to stay away from the coastline and be on alert for occasional gales. It threatened to be the strongest typhoon to hit Hong Kong in almost two decades. The previous record of 3.23m was set by Typhoon Hope in 1979.

It will first pass by Hong Kong, where storm warnings have been raised to their highest level and hundreds of people have been evacuated to storm shelters, with businesses boarded up and most flights cancelled.
