Syrian military has announced that its missile defense system successfully intercepted and downed Israeli missiles fired at an airport in the capital Damascus.
Israel struck in Syria on Saturday night, targeting an area near the airport in Damascus, Syrian state media reported.
An unnamed military source told Sana news agency on Saturday evening that the Syrian army had confronted an Israeli missile attack.
According to a Hadashot TV news report Sunday morning, the Iranian Boeing-made cargo plane was loaded with weapons, and had recently landed at the Damascus International Airport from Tehran. A SANA reporter meanwhile reported sounds of explosions in the vicinity of the airport. The agency gave no immediate report of casualties or damage.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on the reported incident, when approached by Reuters, saying "we don't comment on foreign reports".
In May, Israel said it attacked nearly all of Iran's military infrastructure in Syria, after Iranian forces fired rockets at Israeli-held territory for the first time in the most extensive military exchange ever between the two adversaries, Haaretz reported.
Syria often attributes airstrikes on military bases to Israel, but the Jewish state only rarely confirms such strikes.
In addition, Jerusalem has tried to get the Islamic Republic out of Syria through diplomatic means by appealing to the two main power-brokers in the region: Russian Federation and the United States.
