Minister for Finance Mrs. Kemi Adeosun

Nigeria's finance minister has resigned over allegations she used a forged certificate to avoid the country's mandatory one-year youth service scheme.

The former minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun has departed the shores of Nigeria.

There has been no given reason on the decision of Adeosun stepping down from her position, although there has been an allegation of forging her NYSC discharge certificate.

"Adeosun is not a political heavy-weight and her resignation and replacement would be highly unlikely to alter Nigeria's overall fiscal and economic policies", he said in an emailed note.

According to a Friday statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Ahmed was appointed after Mrs Kemi Adeosun resigned her position.

But she has come under pressure in recent weeks since an independent online newspaper, Premium Times, accused her of obtaining a fake exemption certificate from the NYSC. "The President thanked the Minister for her services to the nation and wished her well in her future pursuits", he said. The government said it was investigating the matter.

The opposition People's Democratic Party called for the minister's resignation when the controversy broke in July.
