General Motors Co has issued a safety recall for about 1.2 million pickup trucks and SUVs globally, citing problems with the power steering function.

They include the Chevrolet Silverado SD; the GMC Yukon; the GMC Sierra LD; and the Chevrolet Tahoe.

GM says the power steering can fail momentarily during a voltage drop and suddenly return, mainly during low-speed turns.

The Detroit-based automaker is recalling over 1.2 million SUVs and full-size pickups because of a concern with the steering mechanism, which may increase the likelihood of a crash. Dealers will update the power steering software at no cost.

The recall campaign hasn't officially begun, so don't rush to call your dealer and set up an appointment to get it fixed just yet.

At an unspecified date, dealers will replace the rear calipers and bleed the brake system to clear the lines of trapped gas.
