After the race, IndyCar announced that Wickens had orthopedic injuries and was still being evaluated. He was cleared from the medical center but declined to discuss the crash out of respect for Wickens, his teammate at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

IndyCar spokesman Curt Cavin said the rookie driver was "awake and alert" as he was transported to a nearby hospital. We just had way too much push. "That's where we stand".

The impact of the wreck tore out a large section of fencing, forcing the race to be red flagged while IndyCar officials made repairs which they said would take at least one hour. Hinchcliffe seemed to be in pain, grabbing his wrists as he slowly left his vehicle. Just before the corner, Hunter-Reay nosed back ahead.

"I'm okay, just thinking about Robert", Hunter-Reay told NBCSN. "Praying for you @robertwickens, I hope you're ok". My helmet was completely covered in oil and I couldn't see anything.
