Sprint, LG Aim to Bring First 5G Smartphone to US Next Year

Sprint and LG Ready to Launch First 5G Phone

Is anyone else willing to step up to the 5G plate when it comes to smartphone?

The 5G smartphone by LG will be customized to work with Sprint's proposed 5G network, but it will also be compatible with T-Mobile's existing 4G network, according to Sprint director of product development John Tudhope.

Launching in the first half of next year, the technology will see Sprint's customers be some of the first consumers in the world to experience the transformative qualities of 5G technology.

Nine Malaysians stuck in Pyongyang will be free to travel and North Koreans in Kuala Lumpur will be allowed to go home. Kim Jong-nam died at Kuala Lumpur's airport a year ago after the toxic VX nerve agent was rubbed on his face.

While the specifications of the smartphone and the exact time of launch are unknown at the moment, the phone will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 modem. The device is scheduled to land on the market in the first half of 2019. AT&T will probably be the first, as it has said it will have a mobile 5G system with a dedicated hotspot, rather than a phone, by the end of 2018.

"LG has been working side-by-side with Sprint for almost 20 years, and we are looking forward to expanding this partnership with 5G", said William Cho, CEO and president of LG Electronics North America. Sprint is one of the largest cellular operators in the United States. Some of the carriers have already announced plans to setup the infrastructure needed in several cities. One big difference is that while Verizon only has three markets announced, Sprint says that it will have 5G available in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington, D.C. If the launch goes as planned, Sprint will become the first carrier to offer 5G services across the country. He also said it will be a lot less clunky than Motorola's 5G mod approach. With this, a total number of nine cities would get Sprint's super fast 5G network when it begins deployment next year.
