One Park, One Day, 41 Overdoses

That scene came on the same day that as many as 60 people in the area of New Haven Green were believed to have overdosed on some form of K2 that may have been laced with opioids, according to New Haven police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

Early reports indicated that 47 people had overdosed, but The Hartford Courant reports that the number of cases had risen to 71 by about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

A doctor at one hospital says some patients tested positive for the powerful opioid fentanyl, but it appears most of the overdoses were caused by a potent batch of straight "K2" synthetic marijuana.

Three arrests have been made in the case, Hartman said, but officials can not say for certain if all three arrested or just one of them are directly responsible for the overdoses.

By late Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Toni Harp had increased police presence on the green, and directed that the New Haven Fire Department and AMR ambulance maintain an around-the clock incident-command center there.

Police arrested one local man believed to be connected to some of the overdoses, city officials said the statement.

No deaths were reported, but authorities said two people showed life-threatening symptoms. They were transported to area hospitals including Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Hospital of Saint Raphael.

Some individuals were unconscious; others were vomiting or exhibiting other overdose symptoms.

Key ruling due for women on trial in Kim Jong Nam killing
Nine Malaysians stuck in Pyongyang will be free to travel and North Koreans in Kuala Lumpur will be allowed to go home. Kim Jong-nam died at Kuala Lumpur's airport a year ago after the toxic VX nerve agent was rubbed on his face.

"We heard from people on the Green that it potentially contained PCP, and some of the reactions in the emergency room suggest there was an opioid involved as well", said EMS Medical Director Sandy Bogucki. About five of his friends from the city's green overdosed on Wednesday.

Emergency responders spent several hours today working to treat the victims and transport them to the hospital.

The victims ranged in age; however, many are part of the homeless population in the city, police said.

Some patients were treated multiple times, officials said.

"Better education, more resources, definitely it will be getting a lot more attention from a law enforcement standpoint, of course, resources like Narcan which we had brought in, being able to have Narcan possibly stationed on the green, so we can have a faster response", Campbell said. "The substance behind these overdoses is highly risky and must be avoided".

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the state departments of Public Health and Mental Health and Addiction Services were helping New Haven officials.

More than a dozen people overdosed on synthetic marijuana July 4 in New Haven, The Associated Press reported at the time.

So far, no deaths have been reported.
