Gunmen attack intelligence service center in Afghan capital Kabul

Afghans mourn a victim of the deadly suicide bombing

Locals say that numerous wounded are in serious condition, and are unlikely to survive.

He said he "prayed" that no one else would experience what he had.

Gunmen attacked an intelligence training centre in Kabul on Thursday, officials said, as families buried loved ones killed by a suicide bomber a day earlier in the war-weary Afghan capital.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the assault. Afghan special forces had arrived at the scene, Rahimi added. Two have been killed, he said, with one remaining.

UNICEF, the United Nations agency that aids the world's most disadvantaged children, expressed alarm over the attack on the education center.

After some seven hours, officials said the two attackers were killed. Members "underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice", the statement said.

There has been no claim of responsibility, but locals suggested ISIS was behind it, as the group often goes after the Shi'ite community.

The Taliban, who launched their Ghazni assault last Friday and battled Afghan forces backed by US air strikes in the middle of the city for days, said their fighters had been pulled out to prevent further harm to the city's population.

Kandahar was the religious heartland of the Taliban during their five-year rule that ended with the 2001 invasion by USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces following the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

The school bombing underscored the price that ordinary Afghans have paid in the grinding conflict as the country reels from a recent uptick in violence, including a massive, days-long Taliban onslaught on the eastern city of Ghazni. "The fighting killed more than 120 security forces and civilians and more than 200 insurgents".

He said the gunmen were shooting at the facility and it wasn't immediately clear how many gunmen were involved in the assault.

This comes as the anti-government armed militants have been attempting to expand their attacks in the key provinces and cities of the country during the recent months.

The Ghazni attack, one of the Taliban's most devastating in years, has clouded hopes for peace talks that had been prompted by an unprecedented ceasefire during the Eid celebration in June and a meeting last month between Taliban officials and a senior US diplomat.
