Spanish top flight to stage competitive game in USA

Barcelona and Lionel Messi could be set to play in America

On Thursday LaLiga and Relevent, the group behind the International Champions Cup, announced a 15-year partnership that includes plans to bring regular-season league games to America for the first time.

Two of Spain's biggest clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid played against each other in the tournament in Miami past year. La Liga North America hopes to simultaneously break ground by playing competitive games overseas and follow the footsteps of giants, like the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball, which have played regular-season games in foreign countries for over a decade.

The deal, which is part of the pre-tournament groundswell push to up the interest in the 2026 World Cup (co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico), will see proper competitive La Liga fixtures being hosted in American and Canadian cities - and we're guessing it probably won't be Huesca vs Eibar.

"The agreement marks an inflection point for soccer - the world's most popular sport in numbers of participants and spectators - in the U.S and Canada".

"Relevent has filled stadiums across the USA with the International Champions Cup, we're thrilled to partner with them on a joint mission to grow soccer in North America".

Korean Leaders Agree to New September Summit in Pyongyang
The three-year conflict ended in an armistice , not a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas technically at war. The South Korean president helped bring about the historic summit in June between Kim and U.S.

The Premier League flirted with the idea of a 39th game played outside of England last decade, but the negative reaction from fans and players saw the idea quickly quashed.

Relevent was founded and is owned by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who called the partnership "the next giant leap in growing soccer's popularity in North America".

Earlier this month, the Spanish Super Cup, Spain's annual curtain raiser between the league and Copa del Rey winners, was moved outside of the country for the first time, with Barcelona beating Sevilla 2-1 in Tangier, Morocco.

"This unique relationship will create new opportunities for millions of North American soccer fans to experience the most passionate, exciting, and highest level of soccer in the world". "This agreement ensures not only a bright future for soccer in North America, but also for La Liga and our clubs".
