Manned space mission by 2022: PM Modi during Independence Day speech

India will launch its first manned space mission by 2022

Before undertaking the launch, we will have two unmanned missions.

"India will send into space - a man or a woman - by 2022, before that if possible", Modi said in a marathon address at the Red Fort in New Delhi for the country´s Independence Day.

The conservative prime minister said that India would be only the fourth country - after Russian Federation, the United States and China - to launch its own manned space mission.

India's attempt to reach space by 2022 comes nearly six decades after Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey into outer space and orbit the earth in 1961. GSLV-Mk III has got a capacity to carry such a module, Nair said.

India launched its first craft to the Moon, Chandrayaan-1, in 2008, and will send a person into space in 2022.

The ambitious human space mission is expected to cost about Rs 10,000 Cr, in addition to the already spent Rs 300-Cr in developing the technologies for the mission.

More than 30 people overdose at downtown CT park; synthetic pot suspected
Rick Fontana, director of emergency operations for New Haven said some overdoses were 'in multiples of 4-6 at a time'. The police chief says they firmly believe the person in custody is responsible for at least some of the overdoses.

According to him, ISRO has already tested the crew module and crew escape systems.

"The human spaceflight will be a national project and not just ISRO's, as we will be collaborating with several institutions, academia and the industry", Sivan told reporters here.

When it achieves the mission, India would be the fourth nation to circle Earth after the Soviets, the Americans and the Chinese. Rakesh Sharma, a former IAF pilot, was the first Indian to travel to space. Chawla was one of the seven crew members who perished in the space shuttle Columbia disaster during re-entry into the earth's atmosphere in 2003. The satellite, later rechristened South Asian satellite, was launched in May past year.

The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called Mangalyaan, is a space probe orbiting Mars since September 24, 2014.

K Radhakrishnan, former ISRO chairman under whose leadership the Mangalyaan mission was launched in 2013, termed the announcement of Gaganyaan mission a "turning point" for the ISRO. This human space flight venture, he said, would take the country's science and technology field to a very high level, inspire the younger generation, and "every Indian can be proud of it".
