Manchester United chiefs are confident David de Gea will soon a new contract.

Sport is reporting that the Red Devils are hopeful of getting the Spain global to commit to a new long-term contract as they look to secure the future of the talented goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old nearly moved to the capital of his home country three years ago when a deal was agreed only for the paperwork not to be completed in time, resulting in a last-minute transfer collapse.

The Old Trafford club were keen to begin talks with goalkeeper De Gea's representatives and their hand has been strengthened by Thibaut Courtois' £35m move to Real Madrid from Chelsea.

His current deal is due to expire in June although the club have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

United are hopeful of agreeing a five-year contract with De Gea, which would keep him at the club well into his 30s and guarantee a testimonial.

The Spanish worldwide won the Premier League's Golden Glove award last season and now earns around £180,000 a week.

There could be positive news soon as the newspaper says United sources expect the Spanish worldwide to sign a new deal worth over £200,000-a-week [£10.4m-per-season] to make De Gea the highest paid keeper in the Premier League.

United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was told by Real president Florentino Perez over breakfast in Miami last month that the Belgium keeper was heading to the Bernabeu and they would not pursue De Gea.

The Spain star has managed to continually improved his game even as United struggled in the aftermath of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.
