Silva also thanked the fans for their support and said the decision was "not easy" after what he had gone through with La Roja and it took him "days and weeks of reflection and analysis".

Spain midfielder David Silva has announced his retirement from global duty after winning 125 caps.

The playmaker was a key man as Spain claimed their first major worldwide title since 1964 at Euro 2008, before then also helping them win the World Cup two years later and Euro 2012.

'It is not easy, after everything I have experienced, to sit down and write this letter, ' the 32-year-old star explained in an open letter posted on Twitter. Without a doubt it is one of the hardest decisions in my career'.

"The national team has given me everything and has allowed me to grow as a player and as a person from my first days in the youth set-up".

David Silva won two European championship titles and a World Cup with Spain.
