Sydney rises in the Economist's global liveability rankings

Vienna has been named the world’s most liveable city

This year, Vienna gained an overall livability rating of 99.1, edging out Melbourne which came in second with a score of 98.4.

Vienna regularly tops a larger ranking of cities by quality of life compiled by consulting firm Mercer.

Hong Kong - whose ranking on Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Global Liveability Index fell dramatically in 2015 due to heightened fears of unrest as part of the so-called Umbrella Revolution - was overtaken by Singapore in the rankings for the first time previous year.

Bangladesh's Dhaka and Nigeria's Lagos were just above at 139th and 138th place, scoring 38.0% and 38.5% respectively.

"While in the past couple of years cities in Europe were affected by the spreading perceived threat of terrorism in the region, which caused heightened security measures, the past year has seen a return to normalcy", the EIU said in a statement about the report published on Tuesday.

Manchester United are being damaged by their political pantomime
Mundo Deportivo claim Pogba, who is contracted to United until June 2021, wants to leave Old Trafford this summer because of a strained relationship with coach Jose Mourinho .

Barca president refuses to rule out Pogba move
However, Pogba's transfer this window seems unlikely as United can not bring a replacement to the club even if he were to leave. Manchester United beat Leicester City 2-1 Friday night in spite of all the drama that now surrounds the club.

Although both cities registered improvements in their "liveability" - a ranking of 140 cities worldwide, across five broad categories of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure - increases in Vienna's ratings were enough for the city to overtake Melbourne.

Melbourne scored 95.0 in stability.

Two other Australian cities feature in the top-ranked places: Sydney (5th) and Adelaide (10th), while only one other European city made the top ten.

Melbourne has finally lost the title of world's most liveable city after a seven-year reign.

Researchers said wealthy financial capitals such as Paris (19th), London (48th) and NY (57th) tended to be "victims of their own success" with higher crime rates and overstretched infrastructure dampening their appeal. Its many green spaces include lakes with popular beaches and vineyards with sweeping views of the capital. London was said to "suffer from higher levels of crime, congestion, and public transport problems than are deemed comfortable". Relative stability across much of Europe improved Vienna's security scores to push it to the top.

It has since been dropped by his successor Phil Goff, and the the city's economic development agency ATEED said it's now all about "jobs".
