Several injured as car hits barriers outside British parliament, driver arrested

Cyclists were injured when the man drove his car into security barriers outside the House of Parliament

A number of people have been injured after a auto crashed into security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament, Scotland Yard say.

He said: "Basically I've seen a man driving a vehicle, and he's gone into one of the bollards".

Police said a number of pedestrians were injured in the incident.

Footage shows a large police presence on the scene in Westminster, including armed officers.

Journalists in the area say the crash "looked intentional" and that the auto was driven into the security barrier "at speed".

Westminster has been placed on lockedown as armed police are on the scene in central London.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the man led away by police on foot at gunpoint after he was pulled from the auto.

Officers remain on the scene. Streets around Parliament Square, Millbank and Victoria Tower Gardens have been cordoned off as dozens of armed police swooped on the scene.

Ms Ochab said "the person driving did not go out" of the vehicle, which did not appear to have a front registration plate when it crashed.

A witness, Jason Williams, said no other vehicles were involved in the crash. "We will issue further info when we have it", London's police force said in a statement on Twitter. I just saw this one vehicle, so it seems to be deliberate.

"I don't know if it was a tip-off, a warning, that this was a bomb. He was taken away very quickly". A number of pedestrians have been injured.

"Anyone who knows this area will know that there is a filter off that allows vehicles to go into Parliament itself... there is a big barrier that comes across the road, created to protect the buildings".

Steel and concrete barriers were added outside Parliament after the 2017 Westminster Bridge terror attack.
