Jury finds cricketer Stokes not guilty

Nasser Hussain England India Test Series

Ben Stokes has been found not guilty of affray.

Stokes told Bristol Crown Court he had been acting in self-defence and was defending two gay men when the incident occurred on September 25 past year.

Cricketer Ben Stokes has arrived at court today as a jury retires to consider its verdict over allegations he knocked two men unconscious in a nightclub brawl. He then offered his hand to Ali, who shook it. The ECB will shortly convene a Cricket Discipline Commission, which will consider whether Stokes or Alex Hales, who was also present during the incident, should face any sanction.

His trial continues today and is not expected to conclude until Wednesday, 24 hours after England are likely to name their squad for the third Test.

England thumped India by an innings and 159 runs in the second test at Lord's on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Stokes is accused of knocking Ali to the floor, with fellow cricketer Hales then apparently kicking his head and stamping on him as he lay on the ground.

During the trial, Stokes was alleged to have lied to the jury, mimicked and bullied two men on account of their homosexuality and acted like a football hooligan. Stokes alleged Ali, who was holding a bottle, had replied: "Shut the fuck up or I'll bottle you".

Prosecutors allege that Ali used a bottle during the fight, threatening Mr Hales and delivering a glancing blow to the shoulder of Mr Barry.
