Erdogan says Turkey to 'boycott' USA electronic goods

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan makes a speech in Ankara Turkey

Turkey's central bank has promised to provide banks with liquidity. The evangelical pastor is on trial for terrorism charges.

Brunson's lawyer Cem Halavurt confirmed to AFP that he appealed for the release of his client once again on Tuesday, saying that: "The court should deliver its ruling in the next three days".

The tension between the two states stemmed out of a recent skirmish over a U.S. pastor Andrew Craig Brunson who was sentenced to nearly two years in prison on terror charges.

Separately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on an official visit to Ankara, said the increased United States tariffs and sanctions imposed by Washington are "based on the desire to dominate everywhere in everything, to control worldwide affairs and to achieve unilateral advantages on global markets".

"We will see that our Turkish lira will be even stronger", he added.

Declaring economic war against the US, Erdogan said Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, will no longer purchase Apple products or other electronic devices made by American companies. That's because investors have lost confidence in management of the economy under Erdogan, who believes in unorthodox economic policy, demands low interest rates and constantly assails "the interest rate lobby".

"It's another Manic Monday", said Jordan Rochester, a currency strategist at Nomura International in London.

He said that Russian Federation and Turkey have set a goal to switch to national currencies in mutual trade.

Erdoğan has blamed the crisis on "economic terrorists" in the U.S., a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, which he said is waging economic "war" against the country. Arrested in 2016, Brunson faces terror and espionage charges. Erdogan claims that his stance against USA imports is necessary due to the recent collapse in Turkish assets.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said his country will boycott USA economic products, after Washington imposed punitive sanctions on Ankara.

Showing no signs of backing down in a standoff with the U.S., Erdogan suggested that Turkey would stop procuring U.S. -made iPhones and buy Korean Samsung or Turkish-made Vestel instead.

It is not clear if this comes after Mr Erdogan's pressure.

The euro fell to a one-year low against the dollar on Monday, and shares in Europe's major banks also dropped.

The Turkish lira has nosedived in value in the past week over concerns about Erdogan's economic policies and after the United States slapped sanctions on Turkey angered by the continued detention of an American pastor.

Despite Erdogan's rhetoric, diplomatic efforts are still under way.

Investors globally fear the damage spreading and have been prompted to sell riskier assets, including other emerging market currencies.

The Turkish lira has been hit by concerns over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's economic policies and a trade and diplomatic dispute with the United States, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally.

On Tuesday the lira recovered some ground, trading at 6.5300 to the dollar at 1334 GMT, up around five percent on the day.

India's government urged people not to panic on Tuesday after the rupee slid to an all-time low against the dollar.

The currency has been steadily declining for the past year.
