Tesla’s Model 3 production head has returned to Apple

Field was a VP of Mac hardware engineering at Apple before leaving for Telsa in 2013.

Field will be involved in Apple's auto division named "project Titan", according to respected Apple Pundit John Gruber. The hire was earlier reported by website Daring Fireball.

Capturing a tweet by Elon Musk three years ago in reply to a German newspaper where he is quoted to have said "If you don't make it at Tesla, you go work at Apple" before going on to apologize.

But the electric auto company's chief executive Elon Musk took over Field's role in April as part of a management reshuffle following a number of missed production deadlines, the FT adds. At the time, Tesla said Field was "just taking some time off to recharge and spend time with his family". Just past year for example, former Apple engineer Chris Lattner left Tesla after only six months.

But in July, however, it was announced Field had left.

Apple has been secretive about its autonomous driving development. Apple hired thousands of engineers and opened up new offices and machine shops to jumpstart the project.

The initial scope of Project Titan had considerably been whittled down and plenty of those involved in the project had in their hundreds either left or been reassigned elsewhere as Apple seeks to partner with other automobile makers for the deployment of its self-driving software.

Field made headlines in March with an email to Tesla workers that urged them to "prove a bunch of haters wrong" by boosting Model 3 output.

In 2017 while being interviewed by Bloomberg the CEO of Apple Tim Cook spoke about the company's involvement in autonomous systems and hinted at Apple's involvement in autonomous cars.

In July, the USA police have detained a former Apple engineer Solana Zhang, he was accused of stealing technology for government vehicles.

There are many speculations regarding the secretive Project Titan, most significantly it was reported in the year 2016 that Apple has left its plans of building a vehicle.

According to Apple, the technology would work along with other sensors fitted in the vehicle such as infrared cameras, ultrasonic sensors, depth cameras, GPS, radar devices and light beam scanning devices.

Just recently, it was reported that Apple was filing a patent for an augmented reality windshield for an autonomous auto.

A sketch of a possible Apple Car interior helped illustrate the tech giant's patent application.

Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr confirmed Field has rejoined Apple, but didn't say what he is working on. Before joining Waymo, Waydo spent 13 years at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
