Ronaldo admitted to a hospital in Ibiza for pneumonia

Ronaldo

Retired Brazilian striker Ronaldo has been hospitalised with pneumonia on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza and is recovering well, a local newspaper reported Sunday (Aug 12).

Later that night, the Brazilian requested a transfer to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario hospital, owned by private health company Policlinica.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid player remains in intensive care and but was "evolving favourably", unnamed hospital sources told the newspaper.

The striker retired from the game in 2011 and reportedly owns a house in Ibiza and is a regular visitor to the island.

This story will be updated when more information on Ronaldo's condition is known.

Rain Suspends PGA Championship during Second Round
Eldrick Woods wasn't the only "Tiger" turning heads Saturday during the third round of the PGA Championship at Bellerive. He had makeable (some more so than others) birdie putts at 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18 ... and missed every one.

Ronaldo, who rose to global fame in the 1990s, and played for various clubs, including Barcelona, Inter Milan and AC Milan, is widely considered to be one of the best football players of all time.

Ronaldo is believed to have arrived in Ibiza for a summer break a few days ago. He has suffered since the end of his career with a thyroid problem that has caused him to gain a lot of weight, and back in 2012 he contracted Dengue fever and was admitted to hospital.

Symptoms - which include a cough and difficulty breathing - can develop suddenly over 24 to 48 hours.

He picked up the Ballon d'Or award for the best player in the world in 1997 and 2002.

The crowning achievement of his career was his display in the World Cup final in 2002.
