Jordan: 4 security officers killed after storming building

The Latest: Jordan official says 3 police killed in raid | Miami Herald

The clash late on Saturday was among the deadliest between suspected terrorists and Jordanian security forces in recent years.

Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz pledged that Jordan would "not be complacent in the hunt for terrorists". However, the kingdom has also been targeted by Islamic militants, both domestic and foreign who have carried out a series of attacks.

Jordan's General Security Radio reports a police officer has been killed as forces stormed buildings outside the capital Amman in search of suspects behind an explosion that killed a policeman.

Security forces gather near a damaged building at the city of Salt, Jordan, August 12, 2018.

Jordanian authorities did not say what motivated the Fuheis attackers, and there was no claim of responsibility.

"The suspects refused to surrender and opened heavy fire toward a joint security force", Ghneimat said on Saturday. A wing of the building collapsed.

Security forces had seized automatic weapons in a "continuing operation", government spokeswoman Jumana Ghunaimat told Reuters.

New Zealand to ban single-use plastic bags
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the news this week, joining a growing list of countries taking action on the issue.

The Hala Akhbar news website linked to Jordan's military said the suspects are Jordanians and that the cell had planned to attack security installations and other sensitive targets.

The security forces eventually arrested three suspects, she said, adding that the operation in Salt was still "ongoing".

Militants from Islamic State and other radical jihadist groups have long targeted the US -allied Jordan and dozens of militants are now serving long prison terms.

In June 2016, a cross-border vehicle bombing launched from Syria killed seven Jordanian border guards.

"It killed Sergeant Ali Adnan Qawqaza and wounded six other members of the patrol", the statement said, adding that an investigation was underway into the cause of the blast.

King Abdullah, a Middle East ally of Western powers against Islamist militancy who has also safeguarded Jordan's peace treaty with Israel, has been among the most vocal leaders in the region in warning of threats posed by radical groups.

At the same time, hopelessness and alienation among some of the kingdom's young people, driven by high youth unemployment, have provided fertile ground for recruitment by terrorist groups.
