FBI seeks motive after U.S. airline worker steals plan, crashes it

A Horizon Q400

Richard Russell was suicidal when he stole the empty passenger plane, authorities say.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter that preliminary information suggested that a mechanic had stolen the aircraft.

Video taken by a bystander showed the passenger airplane making an unlikely upside-down loop, then flying low over Puget Sound before crashing into the sparsely populated Ketron Island in the northwestern U.S. state of Washington.

The plane crash, according to fire officials in the area, resulted in a fire that has since been upgraded to a 2nd alarm response.

The plane wasn't even scheduled to fly at the time of the incident, he said.

Horizon president and CEO Gary Beck said that to the airline's knowledge the man who took the plane did not have a pilot's license.

A 3 ½ year employee of Horizon Air had specialized training and higher-level security clearance, helping him carry out his plan to steal a Horizon Air passenger jet from its parking spot at Sea-Tac Airport on Friday evening.

"An airline employee conducted an unauthorized takeoff without passengers at Sea-Tac; aircraft has crashed in south Puget Sound", it read.

At a news conference in Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, officials from Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air said that they are still working closely with authorities as they investigate what happened.

He flew through the air performing all kinds of unsafe maneuvers before crashing into a small island in the Puget Sound. It will be up the Federal Bureau of Investigation to get to the bottom of how he did it and why, Eckrote said.

While she doesn't provide direct evidence, she cites three unnamed sources who attest to the existence of the tape. She said he then played it off as a joke but she knew he was serious.

The air traffic controller can also be heard trying to talk him into landing. At one point, Russell says he is a "broken guy" with "a few screws loose". "I hope this doesn't ruin your day", he said to the controller, adding that he was grateful to be kept away from other aircraft.

Video showed the Horizon Air Q400, a turboprop plane that seats 76 people, doing large loops and other risky maneuvers as the sun set on Puget Sound.

In partial recordings of Russell's conversations with air traffic controllers that were published online by Broadcastify.com, he said he was sorry to disappoint people who cared about him and described himself as a "broken guy".

Richard Bloom, an aviation security expert at Arizona's Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, said he wasn't aware of another incident in which a ground crew member managed to heist an airplane. "The situation was not their fault but I think they could have given a little more guidance or announced to the plane this is what's going on instead of leaving us all to fend for ourselves", said Leddy. Flights resumed at about the same time the crash occurred, the airport said in a statement.

Video showed fiery flames amid trees on the island, which is sparsely populated and only accessible by ferry. The crash sparked a 2-acre wildfire.

The Federal Aviation Administration said: 'We can't confirm anything at this time.

"The responding fighter pilots flew alongside the aircraft and were ready to do whatever was needed to protect us, but in the end the man flying the stolen plane crashed", Governor Inslee said.

Investigators on Saturday will try to retrieve the plane's flight data recorder and its cockpit voice recorder.

After the plane approached Ketron Island, Waldron saw a thick column of smoke followed by a loud explosion, he said.
